Who:  International Rescue Committee

Position: Urban Farm and Training Specialist

Description: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. New Roots in Dallas is an innovative agriculture and food access program that provides opportunities for refugees to garden, start farm-based businesses, and access healthy, local, culturally appropriate produce. Currently, we partner with five different community businesses, organizations, and churches to manage community garden and urban farming spaces that are accessible to the refugee community of Dallas. Through our MicroProducer Academy, growers can receive additional training to make supplemental income by selling their produce at the New Roots’ Farm Stand back in refugee and immigrant rich neighborhoods. New Roots also runs a Youth Food Justice Internship which uses food and agriculture as a platform for high school students to gain job readiness skills.
