Preparing for a butterfly “baby” (caterpillar) is much easier than preparing for a human baby. At this talk, you’ll learn how to prepare your “nursery” (garden) for the next generation of beautiful butterflies. Learn the basics, including what butterflies will lay eggs on, what the caterpillars need to eat and how to support their parents. This program is included in general admission and free for Heard Museum Members. Designed primarily for adults. Interested youth may attend with an adult. May not be suitable for children younger than 10 years.

Missy Singleton (private lands biologists with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) will discuss the role of pollinators in our environment and how we can help protect them. National Pollinator Week brings attention to the urgent issue of declining pollinator populations while emphasizing the valuable ecosystem services provided by bees, birds, butterflies, bats and beetles.

This month we have a little something for everyone — we’ll be “weeding” in our native vegetation restoration area, gardening in our pollinator beds, and picking up litter.

Presenter is Dan Caudle, a retired NRCS rangeland management specialist, who is now a research associate at BRIT and an independent consultant. Dan is currently working on six native grassland restoration, remediation and long-term management projects. Drawing upon expertise from his 40-year career with NRCS, Dan is advising on projects ranging in size from 6 acres to 15,000 acres located in the Fort Worth Prairie, West Cross Timbers, Post Oak Savanna, and Edwards Plateau regions of Texas and the Gulf Coast Prairie and Longleaf Pine Savanna regions of Louisiana.
