Starting in the Treetop Lounge at 11 a.m. Sam Kieschnick, an Urban Wildlife Biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife, will fascinate participants with information about the urban habitat at MVC. He'll show attendees how to use iNaturalist, a free app for identitying plants and animals, so that they can be citizen scientists any time! Then we head out to the urban forest where the adventure continues and participants start recording and sharing their observations in iNaturalist to create data for scientists all over the world.

Presentation by Lynda Harvey, a Denton County Master Gardener and member of the Trinity Forks NPSOT chapter. “Plant This, Not That” analyzes multiple factors to create a sustainable garden in North Texas. The objective is to design a residential landscape that is appealing, suitable, economic and responsible, where plants can serve a functional purpose in additional to their aesthetic benefits.

Don Wilhelm, USFWS Coordinator for Partners for Fish & Wildlife Program, will talk about federal partnership programs to increase conservation of grasslands via the enhancement of pollinator habitat.

See what the scenery and wildlife of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge are like, and what we will lose if it is opened to oil drilling. Free. Everybody is welcome.

Thanks to the wonderful work of pollinators, much of the food we eat and flowers and plants we enjoy are possible. Learn about how you can make a positive difference in your home environment with Master Gardener Sher Dunaway. Sher’s lecture will focus on how you can provide a diverse assortment of flowering plants and encourage native species in your landscape. Weather permitting, we will take a walk through the Bob Jones Nature Center Pollinator Garden to illustrate how to bring color and friendly wildlife to your yard.

Presenter Jan Hodson’s lifelong work in the wildlife field includes work as a Park Interpreter for Ray Roberts State Park, beekeeping experience with the Denton County Beekeepers Association, and more than 6,000 hours of service to the Elm Fork Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists. Her interactive lecture on Texas mammals will utilize animal skins and plaster track casts to help us learn how to recognize some of the local wildlife by the signs they leave behind.

Learn about the five cat species that call or have called Texas their home: Bobcats, Mountain Lions, Jaguars, Ocelots, and Jaguarundis. Texas Native Cat Society founder Monica Morrison will use her more than fifteen years of experience working with both wild and domesticated cat species to discuss the demographics, history, status and future outlook of our native cats.

Volunteers are needed to craft native wildflower and prairie seedballs with the Dallas Seed Library and Groundwork Dallas, haul them to a meadow along the Trinity Forest Trail, and release them into the wild! The Dallas Watershed Dept. is dedicating 200 potted prairie grasses to the cause of restoring native Blackland Prairie in the area.
