Let’s take a walk, meet some cool plant and animal species, and contribute to citizen science. You don’t have to be an expert. Maybe you’re interested in finding cacti, flowers, lizards, or birds and uploading photos of them to the nature app “iNaturalist” or other citizen science app like eBird. You would also be welcome if you just want to come along with us, enjoy nature, and learn a little.

We will have folks who know the preserve well and know iNaturalist and can help you use it. There may be one or more Texas Master Naturalists with us who can give you pointers on discovering nature at the preserve.

UPDATE: The trails will be muddy so we will limit ourselves to the sidewalk down to the fishing pond (and the boardwalk), and the pollinator meadow.

LLELA: 'Wild DFW' Hike - Lewisville

May 18 2024 - 9:30am to 2:00pm
LLELA
201 E Jones
Lewisville , TX

Enjoy long-distance hikes through fascinating large preserves and parks — without leaving DFW. Dallas Sierra Club joins with Amy Martin, author of Wild DFW, to offer quarterly hikes on trails as wild as North Texas has to offer. Explore these places with naturalists and others that know them the best.

First up: Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area [lee-lah]. We’ll hike every trail there and one not open to the public. Scrappy Eastern Cross Timbers to lush bottomland forest, river and off-river marshes, open meadows and prairies, riverside and old river channels.

Points-of-interest naturalist mini-breaks: insect-home installation, waterbird fishing melee at dam outlet, 1800s cabin and farmstead. Lunch break at bird blind on Bittern Marsh.

We hope these hikes will help Dallas and surroundings develop a mindset of embracing its nature with a deep sense of pride. From that will arise more trails and greater land preservation.

Donations for hike leader thank-you gifts and park/preserve donations appreciated.

Former chief meteorologist for Channel 5, David Finfrock has been a meteorologist in the DFW area for over forty years. He is also an avid outdoorsman. He'll combine his two passions in this presentation about how the weather across Texas shapes our great state.

Attendees will receive access to our picnic area, basin, and Canyon Floor trail after hours and food will be available to purchase. Tickets are $10 minimum donation. We greatly appreciate any gift above this amount to support our mission of protecting birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow.
