The meeting is being held to discuss the serious radioactive waste threat to the Texas/New Mexico region and how we can halt this plan. It will be held in Austin but will also be accessible via the internet or conference call. See instructions below.

There will be an update on what's happening and discussion about organizing strategy and plans. The coalition is working on a statewide media tour with a full-scale sized inflatable mock radioactive waste transport cask - and can use ideas for contacts and possible speakers and invitees for events. We also need to get a network in place since the license comment period could be short and come up very quickly... any day now. We also have a letter that faith leaders might sign on to  and can use help on that front too.

Update on Waste Control Specialists:

Waste Control Specialists is back… with plans a high-level radioactive waste facility for Andrews County, Texas. They want to take 40,000 tons of deadly waste from nuclear reactors around the country and keep it above-ground for 40 years (or longer) at the existing "low-level" radioactive waste dump site. This is the most dangerous of all radioactive waste, the irradiated fuel rods, which are a million times more radioactive than the original fuel. Exposure to unshielded waste is lethal. It would be massive environmental injustice to dump the nation's most deadly waste on the Texas/ New Mexico region, waste doesn't have to be moved.

The WCS proposal was on hold for a while at the NRC, but  the company is moving forward again under new ownership by the equity firm J.F. Lehman & Company.

This plan threatens all of us. This dangerous waste would be shipped by rail and likely travel through major cities including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Midland, El Paso, the Albuquerque region and more. Transport would create risks from leaks, accidents and even terrorist actions. A single rail car would carry as much plutonium as the bomb dropped on Nagasaki and the trains could haul up to ten cars.

We’re making progress. Resolutions opposing transport and Consolidated Interim Storage of this dangerous waste have been passed by Bexar, Dallas, Nueces and Midland Counties, the City of San Antonio, the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club and the Texas Democratic Party, which includes opposition in the Platform.
