In 2003, Karl Ebel initiated a grassland restoration project on 645 acres of the Ebel Grasslands Ranch, located in Hopkins County in Northeast Texas. In 2012, the family bought an additional 360 acres. Prior to the Ebel's purchase of the 1,057 acres, the land was continuously farmed from about 1834. Upon purchasing the land, the Ebels decided to return it to the unique prairie that existed there prior to farming. At least 780 acres were originally tallgrass Silveus dropseed prairie. Karl and Kelli, along with their 12-year old son, Christian, will discuss this 15-year learning adventure in grassland ecology, where they continue sustainable beef and goat production utilizing a rotational grazing system, prescribed burning and trample planting.
