The focus of this meeting will be about nesting birds like egrets and herons. City staff and a wildlife biologist from Texas Parks and Wildlife will address issues associated with these birds. Under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, these nesting birds are federally protected, which means neither residents nor the city can do anything to disturb them once they have started nesting.

Texas is a major route for migratory birds shuttling between the U.S. and Canada, and this springtime event can impact residential, commercial, and industrial properties. Once they do nest, these birds provide challenges such as noise, odor, and significant amounts of excrement on streets, sidewalks, cars, mailboxes, houses and businesses.

The city of Lewisville needs help from residents to address these challenges proactively. Residents are encouraged to protect their trees and remain vigilant in observing bird activity in their neighborhood. The city has set up a website to educate residents on what can and cannot be done with these birds.
