Groundwork Dallas: Parks Cleanup Volunteer Opportunity - Dallas (Every Saturday)

Join Groundwork Dallas at Hines Park, a hidden gem along Harry Hines Blvd. Help protect the park’s water feature, a haven for migratory birds as well as egrets and heron, by removing litter and debris.

Where:  Harry Hines Park, near the intersection of Harry Hines Blvd and Webb Chapel Extension. Parking is in the Xenco Laboratories Lot at 9701 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas TX 75220

Please wear closed-toe shoes, pants, high socks and long sleeves.

Join Groundwork Dallas at Frasier Dam Recreation Area, a unique 116-acre urban wilderness. Help us restore and improve this area through litter clean-up and removal, trail building, and maintenance.

City of Dallas: Tree Giveaway - Dallas (Thru Sept. 30)

Branch Out Dallas for the second year will give Dallas homeowners a free 5-gallon hardwood tree to plant in their yard. The city-wide program distributed about 2,604 free trees last year. Registration for program will be open to Dallas residents from Sept. 1 - Sept. 30, 2019. 

Arlington Water Utilities: Value of Water Coloring Contest - Arlington (Entry deadline Oct. 14)

Arlington Water Utilities is encouraging Arlington ISD students to think about the irreplaceable role water plays in their lives and in the environment, with the Value of Water Coloring Contest.

Arlington students in kindergarten through the fourth grade are invited to enter the contest by drawing, coloring and illustrating a picture with their answer to the sentence, "Because I have water, I can…" 

Pre-kindergarten students can enter the contest by completing one of three coloring sheets. All of the entry forms are available online at One winner will be chosen in each of the six grades participating (pre-k, kinder, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th). 

The winning students and their teachers will each receive a collection of five water-themed books, along with water bottles and other fun water-themed prizes. Additionally, the winners from each grade will be invited to the Nov. 5 Arlington City Council meeting for recognition of their work.

The contest kicked off Sept. 14. 

Tarrant Regional Water District, the Arlington Public Library and River Legacy Living Science Center are co-sponsoring the contest. Entry forms are available and can be turned in at all Arlington Public Library locations and River Legacy Living Science Center, 703 NW Green Oaks Boulevard.

The deadline for entries is by the end of the day on Monday, Oct. 14.

Winners will be announced on the Arlington Water Utilities Facebook page on Oct. 23.

This is an easy 2-mile narrated tour about changes that have already taken place in Dallas and local changes that we can expect. We will begin promptly at the time given and return to our starting point. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. Most of the tour is on pavement. The group is limited to fourteen. Register in advance to secure your spot on the hike.

The tour will be repeated at different times and dates, roughly once a month depending on response and weather.

The group will meet at the corner of South Harwood and Commerce Streets, in Main Street Garden Park, a ten minute stroll from either the St. Paul DART station or the Farmers Market free parking garage. (Note that this is a change from past tours that met at the Farmers Market.)

Discussion on the recent City of Dallas "Green Energy Policy", and the Comprehensive Environmental & Climate Action Plan (CECAP).

The city of Dallas ise opening up the second public engagement process supporting proposed initiatives within the CECAP shortly after this meeting, and value the ability to get knowledgeable input/opinions into our next steps to be included into the plan.

Presenter: Susan Alvarez, assistant director, City of Dallas Office of Environmental Quality & Sustainability.

Ms. Alvarez is serving as the assistant director of the City of Dallas Office of Environmental Quality & Sustainability. She has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, with a minor in geology from Rice University, and postgraduate work in water resources. She is a registered professional engineer in Texas and 5 other western states, and is also a certified floodplain manager and master naturalist in Texas.

Ms. Alvarez brings over 35 years' experience in broad practical experience in civil and environmental planning, engineering, and management for municipal, tribal, state and federal governments. She is currently focused on the Comprehensive Environmental & Climate Action Plan, and the City's environmental outreach efforts.
