Groundwork Dallas: Parks Cleanup Volunteer Opportunity - Dallas (Every Saturday)

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES EVERY SATURDAY

FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH, 9 a.m. to noon

Join Groundwork Dallas at Hines Park, a hidden gem along Harry Hines Blvd. Help protect the park’s water feature, a haven for migratory birds as well as egrets and heron, by removing litter and debris.

Where:  Harry Hines Park, near the intersection of Harry Hines Blvd and Webb Chapel Extension. Parking is in the Xenco Laboratories Lot at 9701 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas TX 75220

Please wear closed-toe shoes, pants, high socks and long sleeves.

Join Groundwork Dallas at Frasier Dam Recreation Area, a unique 116-acre urban wilderness. Help us restore and improve this area through litter clean-up and removal, trail building, and maintenance.

Where: 9300 Stemmons Fwy, Dallas, TX 75247. Take the I-35 South ramp off of Harry Hines Blvd; entrance is to the right just under the bridge.

**Look for the Yellow Feather Flags That Say ‘Parking’ to Find Us**

Looking for fun activities and ways to immerse your children in nature? Sign up for one or more of FWNC&R's Summer Natural History Adventures. The summer camps are available for students entering Kindergarten through 6th grade.

Kindergarten adventures are held on Mondays from 9 a.m. – noon.
First – 6th grade adventures are held Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on designated weeks.

This exhibit celebrates the winning photographs from the 2018 contest, which are on display at the Janette Kennedy Gallery. On Thursday, July 11, 6 p.m. to. 9 p.m., there will be an exhibit reception and celebration with the winning photographers; and on Thursday, July 18, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. there is a Photography Walk along the nearby Santa Fe Trestle Trial. Texas Historic Tree Coalition: Tree Dedication - Wheeler County

The Wheeler County Historical Commission and the Old Mobeetie, Texas Association will host the recognition ceremony of a Wheeler County historic tree on the Old Mobeetie Jail Museum grounds. The mulberry tree has been recognized by the Texas Historic Tree Coalition as being more than 130 years old. Over the years, the tree has become known as “the Temple Houston Tree.” It was planted by the youngest son of Sam Houston when he lived in Old Mobeetie as a memorial to his daughter. You’re invited to bring your lawn chairs and come hear the story of this wonderful old tree as a stone marker is unveiled and a certificate and resolution is presented. 

Parking is available at the Old Mobeetie Jail, and the walk to the tree is about 200 yards from the lot.

NHG welcomes back horticulturist and author Leslie Finical Halleck for all this and more in our book signing and plant swapping event.

First, Leslie will give a short overview of her new book Plant Parenting: Easy Ways to Make More Houseplants, Vegetables, and Flowers, demonstrate a plant propagation technique or two, and spend some time answering questions about plant propagation and plant care. The plant swap will follow the demo and Q&A. The Cafe at NHG supplies free appetizers, and will also offer drinks at happy hour prices for our event.

Acton Nature Center of Hood County: Moth Night - Granbury

The free public event will feature an 8 p.m. mothing presentation at the Pavilion by TPWD Urban Biologist Sam Kieschnick. 

“Moth-ers” from the DFW area will be visiting with their light rigs and light traps to attract, identify and document nocturnal insects found at the Acton Nature Center.  

Texas Master Naturalists volunteers from our Rio Brazos Chapter will offer children’s activities at the Pavilion prior to the 8 PM mothing presentation. Insect repellent, closed-toed shoes and flashlights are recommended for visitors.  Moths are most active on warm, muggy, calm nights.

The public event will be cancelled in the event of a National Weather Service heat advisory, brisk winds, rain or thunderstorms.

Kick off National Moth Week at Texas Discovery Gardens! Did you know that there are ten times as many species of moths as there are butterflies worldwide? Texas Discovery Gardens staff and volunteers will help you discover the diverse moth population that call North Texas home. Black lighting sheets will be set up to draw in these nocturnal pollinators.

Cost is price of admission: 10 adults, $8 seniors, $5 children, free for children 2 & under. Registration is recommended for this event.
