Native Prairies Association of Texas, Fort Worth Chapter: Penitentiary Hollow Hike - Dallas
Jeff Quayle will be leading an adventurous hike to Lake Mineral Wells State Park to Penitentiary Hollow. This will be a moderate hike through Penitentiary Hollow. Hiking boots, long pants and a long sleeve shirt or dressing in layers is preferred, so be prepared for a lot of exploring off of the main trails. Weather permitting. Trees and understory species should be leafing out, so we may be dodging some brush and greenbriar. Be prepared to explore some nook and crannies of the hollows. We will be observing our native ferns in the area and other natives in the park. And a few rare species in the park will be discussed.
RSVP Jeff firstname.lastname@example.org. Meet in the parking lot to the picnic area/Penitentiary Hollow by 10 a.m.
City of Plano: Composting Fair (Family Friendly!)- Plano
Rotate through all of our learning stations to learn what to put into and what to leave out of your compost pile at this family friendly comost fair.
Learn how to safely and effectively compost your food waste – so you’ll never feel guilty about throwing away those wilted salad bits.
It’s a come-and-go event so spend as much (or as little) time as you like trying these fun activities:
· Feeding and petting our worm friends
· Helping to build an indoor worm habitat
· Helping to build compost piles from your yard trimmings - and other weird household stuff
· Making (and taking) wildflower seed balls
· Making compost tea to help our garden grow
· Being a citizen scientist and helping us to take the temperature of our compost pile.
Register here to ensure there are enough materials on hand for everyone to participate. We hope to see all of our little friends (and their grown-ups) in two weeks. Remember: Come dressed to get your hands a little bit dirty!
Carolina Anemone Scavenger Hunt BioBlitz - Mansfield
The spring flowers are starting to bloom across Texas and we need your help to find and document a not-so-common species of Anemone, Anemone caroliniana, or the Carolina Anemone.
Learn what to look for and participate in a Scavenger Hunt BioBlitz where we will visit other nearby locations looking specifically for the Carolina Anemone. (Bring a sack lunch with you, too!) Afterward, we will be looking for volunteers to visit locations throughout DFW during the spring blooming period to find as many new locations as we can!
