Botanical Research Institute of Texas: David Conn Paintings and Prints - Fort Worth

Sep 8 2017 - 4:00pm to Oct 26 2017 - 4:00pm
Botanical Research Institute of Texas
1700 University Dr
Fort Worth , TX

This group of paintings and prints is a retrospective exhibition that starts with Blackstonian from the forest near the Mosel River in Germany and ends with winter scenes from his boyhood in Sussex, New Jersey. Following a realist tradition, Conn carves an image into a linoleum block using one tool. Then, by enlarging the image to a painting scale the lines between representation and abstraction are interwoven, creating a sense of being in and of the forest.

BRIT will be open from Sept. 9, 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Gallery Night with a public reception from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. and a gallery talk by the artist at 6:15 p.m.

Dallas Peace & Justice Center - Film Screening 'Rooted in Peace' - Dallas

Sep 19 2017 - 7:00pm to 9:30pm
Landmark's Magnolia Theatre
3699 McKinney Ave
Dallas , TX

In celebration of the upcoming International Day of Peace, the DP&JC is hosting Greg Reitman’s Rooted in Peace—a globally transformative, socially-conscious, environmentally-based film. Reitman’s journey of self-analysis resonates with audiences seeking inner peace in a world full of people dominated by war, affected by global warming or haunted by inner conflict. The film follows Reitman as he speaks to thought leaders around the world having conversations around sustainable development, discussing the challenges of our never-ending wars, and facing the realities of uncertainty placed on the world’s institutions by our current political climate. Reitman’s introspective and socially relevant documentary was most recently screened at the United Nations. From the U.S. to Costa Rica to India, award-winning filmmaker and environmental activist Reitman (producer of Fuel) traveled to visit such luminaries and activists as Deepak Chopra, music legends Donovan, Mike Love and Pete Seeger, film director David Lynch, Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire, Ted Turner, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and many others. Their common ideas and examples make Rooted in Peace one of the most unexpectedly inspirational viewing experiences of our time.

Panel discussion follows with local leaders of peace and the environment:

Karen Blessen - Founder of 29 Pieces; Pulitzer Prize Winner; Children's book illustrator, "Peace One Day".
