Perot Museum: Maya - Hidden Worlds Revealed - Dallas

The exhibition brings together more than 200 authentic artifacts and immersive environments to explore the astonishing accomplishments of one of the most powerful indigenous Mesoamerican civilizations, that still has millions of living descendants today. Visitors will learn how the Maya built towering temples and created an intricate calendar system while discovering what archaeologists have uncovered about the once-hidden ancient Maya, and the unresolved questions about why these ancient cities were abandoned. Through hands-on activity stations, guests can decipher hieroglyphs, learn cultural and architectural techniques, and explore an underworld cave, ancient burial site, mural room and more. The bilingual exhibition, presented in English and Spanish, requires a surcharge for members and non-members.

This group exhibition is inspired by the Greek Proverb, “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” The exhibition will feature work by 40 artists, benefiting the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center.

Opening reception Aug. 19, 6-8p.m. A Passion for Texas Native Trees Talk by Tary Arterburn, Principal, studioOustide, will be held Aug. 31, at 7 p.m.

Exhibit runs through Sept. 16.

Dallas Sierra Club: Pecos Wilderness Bus Trip

Sleeper bus trip to backpack in the Pecos Wilderness. Four days to hike and three nights to camp. We offer a choice of five hike itineraries ranging in difficulty from moderate to strenuous. The Pecos Wilderness Area protects a significant part of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico. Late summer temperatures will be significantly cooler than Dallas. The trip price is discounted to $260 per person for registration received by Aug.15. We recommend earlier registration because this holiday weekend has historically been a popular date for outings.

Science tells us anthropogenic climate change is the existential threat of our time. Art provides the emotional expression of this environmental emergency. 

ARTISTS: Please submit a piece to this show. We explore impacts such as sea level rise, droughts, floods, famine, coral bleaching, ice loss, species extinction and superstorms.
