The Texas Veggie Fair aims to show folks there’s a lot more to a plant-based diet than salads. Attendees will find all their favorite comfort foods prepared vegetarian style at the annual fest. For vegans and vegetarians, it’s a plant-based Disneyland, where the vegan cheese fries, corn dogs and cupcakes flow.

The sixth annual event to be held Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Reverchon Park in Dallas is growing. Last year, an estimated 10,000 people showed up to partake in all things veggie.

As in past years, the event will feature speakers, including Kristina Carrillo-Bucaram, a Rice grad and founder of the largest raw, organic produce co-operative in the U.S, along with chef demos and live music.

There will also animal advocates on hand selling T-shirts, buttons and delivering their message.

The event was started by James Scott, the Dallas-based founder of Vegan Drinks. He says he became a vegetarian about 10 years ago for health purposes but he soon learned more about animal welfare issues involved in food production.

“Once I started learning about practices of the food industry, which involve a general inhumanness toward animals and environmentally irresponsible procedures, I became vegan,” he says. “So avoiding contribution to that industry — the factory farming — became my motivation.”

As always, the fair is dog friendly and there’s sure to be some dog appropriate veggie treats on hand.

Look for the Green Source DFW booth. We’ll be there unless we’re standing in line for a veggie corn dog.
