An Austin-based green home improvement store is branching out in DFW. After opening a Dallas store in June, TreeHouse is launching its third location in Plano this week.

The 35,000-square-foot store, located in a renovated space next to Whole Foods in the Preston Park Colonnade, is set to open Thursday, Jan. 18, at 10 a.m.

Cofounder Jason Ballard said the Plano location will be the eco-friendly chain’s first attempt to move into the suburbs where its target demographic resides. Homeowners, as opposed to renters, are more likely to purchase mid to high-end home improvement products.

“Kitchen remodels, full smart home upgrades are typically undertaken by people who own their home,” said Ballard, who envisions taking the store nationally.

Ballard and his investors, including Dallas-based Container Store founder Garrett Boone, believe it will be their most successful store yet. The Dallas location is already outperforming the flagship store in Austin.

The reasons? Austin has a large population of renters. Plus the Capitol city is already overflowing with culturally progressive start-ups.

“It can be difficult to cut through the noise in Austin. In Dallas, as far as sustainability goes, we’re the only game in town,” said Ballard.

According to its marketing material, TreeHouse is the world’s first home upgrade company specializing in curated products and home project services that promote healthy and sustainable spaces with an emphasis on high performance and design. The shelves are stocked with green versions of eco-friendly paints and stains, along with flooring, tile, lighting, cabinets and ceiling fans. Those ready to invest in major upgrades can also find turnkey solar power systems, metal roofing and energy efficient windows. At the Plano store, a courtyard features native plants, eco-friendly garden supplies and patio furniture.

Shoppers will find popular brands such as Nest thermostats and detectors, Tesla home batteries, Dunn-Edwards paint, Haiku fans, FLOR carpet tiles and Sunpower solar panels.

As for where to start making improvements? Ballard recommends four changes to make your home healthier immediately: filter the air, filter the water, cook on nontoxic surfaces and clean with eco-friendly products.

Ballard recommends four changes to make your home healthier immediately: filter the air, filter the water, cook on nontoxic surfaces and clean with eco-friendly products.

He said studies have shown that most Americans are exposed to toxins primarily from inside their homes. Tap water picks up contaminants as it flows through 50-to-70-year-old pipes. Indoor air quality is affected by off-gassing of paint, furniture, cabinetry and flooring. The food we eat absorbs toxins from household cleaners as well as from cookery such as nonstick skillets.

“I always say practice prudent avoidance,” he said. “If an environmentally friendly alternative is available and affordable, buy it.”
