The Sustainable U series continues next week at Richland College in Dallas with a discussion on state-of-the-art energy effiency in buildings.

Efficiency is the Master Key to High Performance Buildings is the topic for the Dec. 12 event at 1 p.m.

Speakers include Paul Westbrook, president of Re:source Design and retired Sustainable Development Manager of Texas Instruments; Norma Lehman,  principal of higher education, director of sustainability at Beck; Michael Brown, energy systems design engineer at HKS and host of the 3P Theory podcast; Jake Steiner, co-founder and partner, Smart Energy 360; and Ryan Sheard, account executive, McKinstry, who will discuss the new Catalyst net zero energy building at Eastern Washington University.

It's the third environmentally focused free event, presented by Dallas County Community College District and EarthX, the Dallas-based international nonprofit, as part of their Sustainable U series.

Four more events are planned in the series for 2020:

February (date TBA) – “Smart Cities” at North Lake College

February 20 – UN’s World Day of Social Justice at Eastfield College

March 25 – Trees and Native Landscape at Brookhaven College

April 3 – Future of Recycling at Mountain View College

Georgeann Moss, executive administrator of Sustainability Outreach and Initiatives at DCCCD, says that in keeping with DCCCD’s founders’ foresight, these free events will rotate among the seven colleges. Some will be held at satellite campuses and some will be held at main campuses. “We wanted to make sure that people all around the county had easy access to at least one of the events. When DCCCD was originally planned, the goal was to ensure that everyone in Dallas County would live within 15 minutes of one of its colleges.”

The free events are underwritten by EarthX. The public need only to register in advance for the pop-up community events.

Ten years ago, EarthX and DCCCD became partners at their first event in the arts district. EarthX and DCCCD committed to building awareness in the community of what sustainability is and what they need to do to achieve it.

“Because education is DCCCD’s core business, it just makes sense for us to team up with EarthX to share these messages to as broad an audience as possible,” says Moss.

All events include panel discussions, with some including exhibits and hands-on activities. Each college selected their own topic and is collaborating with EarthX on program development. For more information and registration link here.
