Native plant sales fill fall calendar

Now that the long hot summer is winding down, it’s time to spruce up your gardens. Make sure you’re including native plants in your landscape.

Not only do native plants do better in the Texas heat, they require less water than exotics. They also provide food for pollinators and native wildlife.

The Native Plant Society of Texas, headquarted in Fredericksburg, was an early promoter of native plants. Founded in 1981, it's been encouraging conservation, research and adoption of Texas plants for almost four decades.

North Texas has seven NPSOT chapters in North Texas - Dallas, White Rock Lake, Tarrant County, Collin County, Denton, Weatherford and Glen Rose. Several host native plants in the fall where you can buy a variety of wildflowers and native grasses, including plants not typically found at garden centers. In addition, several other groups and institutions promote native plant use through their their own sales. Here's where to find them:

Sept. 15

DALLAS - Texas Discovery Gardens hosts its Pollinator Plant Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sale features 600 varieties of rare native and adapted pollinator-friendly plants. You can also peruse demonstration gardens. A Members Only sale is held on Sept. 14. Texas Discovery Gardens is located in Fair Park at 3601 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Dallas.

Sept. 22

DALLAS - Native Plant Society of Texas' White Rock Lake Chapter hosts a Fall Plant Sale from 8 a.m. to noon at Good Local Markets, 9150 Garland Road, Dallas. Sale features organically homegrown native plants by members in native Blackland Prairie soil in extreme conditions for heartiness and extreme drought tolerance. Rain date is Sept. 29.

DALLAS - Native Plant Society of Texas’s Dallas Chapter hosts its annual Fall Native Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to noon at Midway Hills Christian Church, 11001 Midway Road in Dallas. Look for the pavilion in the Raincatcher’s Garden at the north end of the property.

ARLINGTON - The Molly Hollar Wildscape hosts it Fall Native Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Randol Mill Park, 1901 W Randol Mill Road in Arlington. The sale is located at the greenhouse, rear of the park, behind the swimming pool.

ARLINGTON - Native Plant Society of Texas’ North Central Texas Chapter hosts it annual Fall Native Plant Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at River Legacy Park, 701 NE Green Oaks Boulevard in Arlington. Go to the Elm Grove Pavilion.

Oct. 6

CEDAR HILL - Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center is hosting a native plant sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some plants can be purchased ahead of time online

Oct. 12-13

FORT WORTH - The Fort Worth Botanic Garden hosts its annual Fall Plant Sale featuring native and adapted plants from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Oct 13

DENTON - Denton County Master Gardener Association hosts its Fall Garden Fest from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Denton County Fairgrounds, 2217 N Carroll Boulevard in Denton. The event features speakers, kid’s activities and vendors.

Native Plant Sales PrimroseDALLAS - North Texas Cactus & Succulent Society hosts the Cactus Succulent Symposium from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Dallas Arboretum, 8525 Garland Road, Dallas. The day-long event features presentations about cacti and succulents accompanied by sale of unusual and rare plants and art pottery. Arboretum admission required if not a member of NTC&SS or affiliate but no additional charge for the seminar or the sale. More info: 214-529-7046.

Oct. 18-21

SAN ANTONIO - Native Plant Society of Texas hosts a Fall Symposium in San Antonio themed "A Meander Through the Native Plant Communities of the San Antonio River Basin" for serious native plant enthusiasts. Details and description here.

Oct. 27

GLEN ROSE - Native Plant Society of Texas Prairie Rose Chapter hosts its Fall Native Plant Sale from  9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Courthouse Square, 101 Vernon Street in Glen Rose.
