The Health, Home and Garden Expo will be held Sept. 15 at the Plano Event Center.

Organic gardening guru Howard Garrett and nutritionist Martie Whittekin have been sharing each other’s radio programs and advice many years. Next month, the duo are partnering to host their 9th annual Health, Home and Garden Expo on Sept. 15 at the Plano Event Center.

Whittekin, host of Healthy by Nature, earned a bachelor of science from Ohio State University 1967. In 1982, she started a career as a nutrition counselor and has published three books on natural health.

Howard Garrett and Martie Whittekin are cohosts of the natural health expo on Sept. 15.

Garrett, aka the Dirt Doctor, received the Green Source DFW Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He earned a BS in park administration and landscape architecture from Texas Tech University in 1969. After serving with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, he started his business career as a laborer and assistant golf course superintendent at Club Corporation of America.

In the late 1980s, he had an epiphany after noticing his toddler sticking things in her mouth while he was out working in the yard.

“At that moment it dawned on me it wasn’t very smart to have toxic chemicals around the house,” he told GreenSourceDFW.org.

Today, the Dallasite is a national leader in the organic gardening and natural living movement. Drawing on extensive experience in landscape, contracting, greenhouse growing, golf course planning and maintenance and organic product development, Garrett provides advice on natural organic gardening landscaping, pet health, pest control and natural living on his nationally syndicated radio show. He is also the author of 15 books.

At the upcoming expo, eight speakers including Garrett will talk about optimizing health, organic gardening, safer home products and the environment.

A few of the gardening topics to be covered include tree planting, fertilizer, insect and weed control, mulch, landscape design, food crops, raised beds and organic lawn care. Health topics covered include: digesting, energy enhancement, herbal therapies, holistic dentristy, probiotics and supplements. See all topics here.

In addition to learning from experts, more than 100 exhibitors will provide ways for those attending to test desired products and learn from the service providers before scheduling appointments. A great many exhibitors offer special savings and coupons.

Admission to the expo is $10 but if you purchase online, tickets are $5 each.

A portion of the proceeds will support the Texas Organic Research Center, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

“Martie and I are excited to be offering the Health, Home, and Garden Expo, because it’s the first event in Dallas-Fort Worth offering everything a homeowner might need,” says Garrett. “By visiting us at this wonderful and incredible one-day event, you get to hear leading Dallas-Fort Worth people share their advice.”
