Oak Cliff Earth Day is coming back in 2018 and will feature more green fun, with new organizers – Green Source DFW and its parent nonprofit, The Memnosyne Institute – stepping in to host the event.

The event will be held Sunday, April 15, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lake Cliff Park in Dallas.

“This year's Oak Cliff Earth Day will be combined with the Green Source DFW’s annual Run for the Environment to make for a full day of green fun,” said Wendel Withrow, director of Green Source DFW and cochair of the fest.

The grassroots eco-friendly celebration, which had been held in Dallas every April since 2007, was put on hold last year.

According to Coke Buchanan, cochair of Oak Cliff Earth Day and director of the Center for Global Outreach at The Memnosyne Institute, the popular Earth Day event drew as many as 100 vendors and 7,000 attendees in year’s past. However, hosting the event took its toll on volunteers and last year, they decided not to host it.

Green Source DFW Run for the Environment 2017The Memnosyne Institute, which had been a major sponsor of the fest for several years, didn’t want to see the family-friendly festival come to an end. So the nonprofit volunteered to take over in 2018.

“There was a such a great demand for the festival,” said Buchanan. “We have people on staff who can handle the nitty gritty while still keeping it the people’s Earth Day celebration.”

As a result of the new partnership, Green Source DFW’s fourth annual Run for the Environment will be held during the festival.

Green Source DFW’s fourth annual Run for the Environment will be held during the festival.

“The day will start with the 5 K timed run and a 1 mile walk, followed by the opening ceremonies at 11 a.m.,” said Withrow. “We expect a wide variety of entertainment, environmental education  and food for all including vegans, vegetarians and omnivores like me.”

Buchanan added that they plan to raise the bar on artisans and entertainment for the festival. Also new this year is a Green Man and Mother Nature contest to encourage folks to dress up in their favorite nature-themed costumes.

Vendors can reserve a booth for early-bird pricing until March 19. Cost is $30 for non-profit businesses or organizations and $55 for for-profit businesses through the early deadline.

“Mark your calendars for April 15 and join the people’s Earth Day,” said Withrow.
