Want to make a career out of saving the planet?

The city of Irving is hosting a free Environmental Career Symposium on Saturday, Oct. 19.

City of Irving Environmental Programs Coordinator Emily Asbury and her staff aim to enlighten people interested or curious in environmental job opportunities.

“We just want to show how many opportunities are available for people interested in the environment,” said Asbury. “People might not realize there are a lot of different opportunities.”

Attendees will get firsthand advice from knowledgeable experts, she said. In addition to booths, there will two panel sessions: “How to Choose the Right Environmental Career for You.” Topics include choosing a degree, public vs. private and how to break into the industry. The second panel session is “A Day in my Life.” Topics include typical tasks and responsibilities, office vs. field work and skills you need every day.

Environmental Careers“Our goal is to have four to five professionals on each of the two panels, making a total of around 10 speakers.”

Tables will also be set up and manned by professionals who will share their knowledge.

Emphasis will be put on environmental consulting and other types of jobs like water and environmental compliance.

“Representatives from both private and public sectors will participate and we’ll have people from the education sector, including area universities, as well. Wildlife and anything in the environmental field will be covered.”

She explains that environmental professions cover a broad spectrum.

“Depending on who you ask, answers will vary. In my opinion, any job that is environmentally related is considered to be an environmental job, whether it’s a writer, consultant, scientist, etc.”

As more people understand the urgency of meeting our environmental challenges, Asbury feels that the market for environmental jobs will grow.

“Looking into the future, a lot of companies are interested in having people be smart about helping conserve our resources and making our planet greener."
