• The BOPA program, launching in August, will help residents dispose of the top four household hazardous waste items safely and more conveniently.

Dallas already has a collection site where residents can drop off hazardous waste that can potentially harm water quality, wildlife and sanitation workers. Now the city is making it easier for residents to responsibly dispose of the most common household hazardous items by bringing the drop-off center to them.

The city of Dallas recently announced it’s launching the BOPA mobile program. Starting next month, this city vehicle will be accepting household batteries, oil, latex paint and antifreeze -- hence the acronmyn BOPA -- at various locations around Dallas.

“We already have the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center at 11234 Plano Road in Dallas, which accepts a variety of household products,” said Danielle McClelland, spokeswoman for the Sanitation Department. “When we start operating our mobile unit, residents of the network cities will also be able to drop off -- for free -- the most commonly dropped off items at Dallas’ BOPA mobile.”

Initially, the BOPA mobile will be stationed at Southwest Center Mall, 3662 W Camp Wisdom Road, every fourth Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning Aug. 24. Eventually, the vehicle will rotate at various locations around the city. The schedule is subject to change so check the website for the most current info.

This service is free to residents of Dallas and member cities, including Addison, De Soto, Duncanville, Farmers Branch, Garland, Highland Park, Irving, Mesquite, Richardson, Rowlett, Sachse, Seagoville, Sunnyvale, University Park, and unincorporated areas of Dallas County. Users will need to bring a driver’s license or utility bill to show proof of residence.

In addition, while they’re at the BOPA mobile, residents can pick up household cleaning products that have been left at the collection center in northeast Dallas. (See list of items accepted at the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center.)

McClelland said a schedule for the BOPA mobile truck is in the works and will be announced shortly. Keep up with the BOPA mobile schedule at DontWasteToday.com
