A Dallas-based juice chain was created after two Europeans moved to Dallas and found the juice market left them parched.

Horatio Lonsdale-Hands and Bernard Lucien Nussbaumer, a Brit and Swiss who grew up together in Lausanne, Switzerland, reconnected in Dallas and picked up their friendship where they left off. Turns out, the two also shared a penchant for raw veggies and fruits. 

When the men realized Dallas was lacking in the juice scene, they founded a company called Buda Juice to pick up the slack. The founders researched, hired expert nutritionists and consultants and worked through a number of recipes until the flavors and nutritional content matched the mission of the company they envisioned.

Today Buda Juice offers cold-pressed, USDA certified organic, fresh and unprocessed, glass bottled juice with a cold chain from farm to bottle to consumer. 

“We get our product from the fields and put it into refrigerated trucks all the way to Dallas,” chairman and CEO Horatio Lonsdale-Hands told Houston CultureMap last year. “Then our whole facility, 5,000-square feet, is refrigerated. We actually cold press at 34 degrees, where other people are cold-pressing at room temperature.”

Headquartered in the Design District in Dallas, the company began in 2014 and sells in 33 locations and restaurants in Dallas, 2 in Houston and 11 locations in Canada.  

Buda Juice also ships anywhere in the United States.

As for the company’s green practices, the owners said they are a major advocate of it. 

“Buda Juice believes in glass bottles, which means a low environmental impact,” said Lonsdale-Hands.  “Glass is 100 percent natural and 100 percent recyclable while plastic is made from chemicals, can mimic hormones and cannot be recycled back into bottles. Also, because Buda Juice believes in recycling, we donate our organic pulp to local farmers.” 

The real essence of the Buda Juice story is the pair’s children, according to their website bio. (Bernard has four and Horatio three.) After much trial and error and doctor visits, it turned out that Lonsdale-Hands' oldest son had several food allergies and needed to eat clean, organic, gluten- and dairy-free, chemical-free food.

Buda Juice had to be something clean enough and delicious enough that they could give it to their kids daily to fuel their energy and to keep them feeling and performing their best. 

The main benefits overall of cold pressed juice is that cold pressing extracts more juice than other methods, so you get not only more juice, but more nutrients. It also gives your body a break from digesting a lot of fibers. Buda Juice uses pounds of pressure to squeeze their juice out and the certified organic produce goes from farm to consumer in five days or less, fresh from the fields. 

“The brain-food connection is so powerful, that there was no other path for Buda Juice to take than to be certified organic, glass bottled, GMO-free, pesticide-free, chemical-free veggies and fruits juiced to perfection,” said Lonsdale-Hands.  

The partnership is also a fun culmination of the founders’ talents and past experiences. It brings together the leadership and vision of Lonsdale-Hands, who co-created ZuZu Handmade Mexican Food as well as Nipper’s Champagne and Caviar clubs, with the free spirit and energy of Nussbaumer, an avid yogi, photographer and film producer who founded Global Peace Factory Coffee. 

With nine juices and boosts, a Buda Almond Milk and Buda Basilato Soup, Buda Juice also offers one, three and five-day cleanses.

“Buda Juice is more about the lifestyle of getting into the habit of having your regular cold-pressed juice every day, rather than trying a different one every time,” concluded Lonsdale-Hands. “Each customer is looking for the juice that is right for them.
