Zero Waste Fort Worth: Solid Waste Management Plan Forum - Fort Worth

Sep 15 2016 - 6:30pm
Fort Worth Botanic Garden
3220 Botanic Garden Blvd
Ft Worth , TX

The third and final public meeting will give residents a chance to share their input on one of Fort Worth's largest green initiatives to date: The Comprehensive Solid Waste Plan.

The draft plan can be found here:

http://fortworthtexas.gov/swplan/

Scheduled to be held at the Botanic Garden Auditorium, 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd., the meeting will cover ways that the new Comprehensive Solid Waste Plan can address quality of life and ensure a healthy environment now and into the future. The goal is to increase landfill diversion by reducing, reusing, and recycling as much waste as possible.

Recommendations for comments:

1) the city's goal is 40% landfill diversion in 20 years, we are recommending a goal of 60%

2) add organic waste to the bin pickup program (organic waste is a huge component of landfill waste; just think about all the food and coffee grounds you throw away)

3) require all businesses to recycle/compost (if all businesses, including restaurants and manufacturers were to recycle/compost, another huge waste stream is diverted)

4) require all multi-family residences to provide ample recycling/composting opportunities (the current ordinance requiring all units of 8 or more doesn't specify that the complex provide ample bins)

5) require recycling of construction debris/waste

6) require all schools to recycle/compost (again, another huge component of our waste stream can be diverted)

Zero Waste Fort Worth is a group created to promote the principles of zero waste. Please see and like the FB page to read more about the zero waste concept.
