Perot Museum: Maya - Hidden Worlds Revealed - Dallas

The exhibition brings together more than 200 authentic artifacts and immersive environments to explore the astonishing accomplishments of one of the most powerful indigenous Mesoamerican civilizations, that still has millions of living descendants today. Visitors will learn how the Maya built towering temples and created an intricate calendar system while discovering what archaeologists have uncovered about the once-hidden ancient Maya, and the unresolved questions about why these ancient cities were abandoned. Through hands-on activity stations, guests can decipher hieroglyphs, learn cultural and architectural techniques, and explore an underworld cave, ancient burial site, mural room and more. The bilingual exhibition, presented in English and Spanish, requires a surcharge for members and non-members.

Denton County Transportation Authority: Denton County Bike Challenge

The Denton County Transportation Authority is partnering with the North Central Texas Council of Governments to host the 2017 Bike Everywhere Challenge to encourage people to ride their bike instead of driving their car during the month of May which is National Bike Month. This free challenge is open to all Denton County residents to enjoy the benefits of biking while also getting a chance to win cool prizes.

The challenge starts Monday, May 1, and ends on Wednesday, May 31. Each participant must create a free account on NCTCOG’s Try Parking It website, joinDCTA’s Bike Everywhere Challenge and log their bike trips to be eligible to win the challenge prizes.

The three participants with the most bike trips logged at the end of the challenge will win the following top prizes provided by DCTA’s three member cities – Denton, Lewisville and Highland Village – who have sponsored the challenge:

·         1st Place – $150 gift card to Cadence Cyclery and sponsorship swag

·         2nd Place – $75 gift card from Denton Bicycle Center and sponsorship swag

·         3rd Place – Two VIP tickets to the 2017 Lewisville Western Days Festival ($500 value) and sponsorship swag

All participants must log their bike trips by Monday, June 5, to be counted toward the challenge. Participants who don’t win the top three prizes will still be eligible to win prizes for NCTCOG’s Try Parking It rewards program.

DCTA customers can ride their bikes to A-train rail stations and take advantage of bike racks on buses and the A-train. Bicycles are allowed on the A-train and most DCTA buses.

Jason Singhurst is the speaker. Jason Singhurst has been a botanist/plant ecologist at Texas Parks & Wildlife Department for over 20 years. He coordinated a 95-county tallgrass prairie mapping project in Texas with a partnership with NPAT. As a result of this mapping project partnership, Jason joined the NPAT board and has assisted with the Property, Acquisition and Management Team. He has described five plant species new to science that are endemic (restricted) to Texas and co-authored the book Rare Plants of Texas. He has an extensive knowledge of the flora of Tallgrass Prairies. Recently, he developed an Identification of Milkweeds Field Guide in support of the Texas Milkweeds and Monarchs iNaturalist mapping project.

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra will be holding their annual summer concert series June 2 – July 8 and they are looking for volunteers to assist patrons with sorting their recyclable materials. Volunteers will receive free admission for themselves and a guest to the performance, and can earn extra perks for volunteering at 6-plus performances. Volunteers must be available to attend mandatory training on May 31 at 6:30pm at the Botanic Garden and will need to be available from 5:45 p.m. through up to one hour after the concert ends (typically 10-10:30 p.m.) on the night of the performance. Texas Land Conservancy: National Trails Day at Oak Cliff Nature Preserve - Dallas

Get your hands dirty with TLC by helping clean up our preserve and maintain the trails. This 120-acre preserve is in the heart of the Oak Cliff neighborhood and well-loved by the people of Dallas, especially the mountain biking community. 

Please arrive by 8:45am to get registered and bring closed-toed shoes and a water bottle. Snacks provided by KIND Bars. If you have a favorite pair of work gloves or pruning tools (loppers or handsaws), please bring those as well. Children over 12 are welcome, if accompanied by an adult.

In addition to individuals and families, we encourage you to bring a group from your church or local community organization and help us restore this urban treasure visited by thousands of hikers and bikers year round!
