U.S. Zero Waste Business Council: Zero Waste Business Conference - Austin

The 5th annual National Zero Waste Business Conference, “Tuning in to Zero Waste,” Wednesday, June 1 through Saturday, June 4 in Austin, TX is the premier event for waste reduction at businesses and beyond. The event is conducted by the U.S. Zero Waste Business Council (www.uszwbc.org) in partnership with local host/title sponsor Austin Resource Recovery in a city known for great music and progressive zero waste actions.

Get the latest best practices from experts who are making zero saste a reality by attending sessions focused on zero waste operations, economics, policies, and more. Keynote speakers include Kathy Loftus, Whole Foods Market Global Leader of Sustainable Facilities and Mathy Stanislaus, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Solid Waste & Emergency Response at the U.S. EPA. Presenter Omar Bocanegra is a fish and wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Arlington, Texas Field Office. He coordinates activities associated with the Endangered Species Act, such as listing actions, permits, consultations and recovery of federally threatened or endangered species. The Arlington Field Office serves 112 counties in Texas and is the lead office for the lesser prairie-chicken, endangered black-capped vireo and endangered sharpnose and smalleye shiners. Omar has worked for the Service for over 16 years on endangered species issues, as well as fish and aquatic insect studies. He received both his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology and Master of Science in Biology from the University of Texas at Arlington. His Master’s research focused on sexual selection in the desert firetail damselfly.

Children ages 5 to 10 will join River Legacy staff for a summertime PJ party full of cool summer fun, pizza and snacks while exploring how animals (and humans too!) stay cool in the heat of summer.

Participants will meet some cool-as-a-cucumber animal friends, go on a nature adventure in the cool of the evening, take part in some cool science experiments and wrap up the evening with the movie Lilo & Stitch (PG). Children are welcome to wear their favorite PJ's, but closed toe shoes are recommended.

DFW Urban Wildlife Group: Wildlife Watching - Dallas

The first ever DFW Urban Wildlife Group get together. We will meet at the old Dreyfuss Club at 600 E. Lawther. From there we make our way down to Sunset Bay and Winfrey Point. There should be plenty of wildlife along the way, and Sunset Bay is well known for its abundant waterfowl.

Afterwards, diehards will reconvene at the spillway (2138 Winsted Dr, Dallas, TX 75214) and follow the dam around to the old fish hatchery. We will take a few minutes to visit the Monk Parakeet colony near the Pump Station.

Bring your cameras. This will be a great opportunity to put some faces with names, talk wildlife and photography and get some exercise and fresh air. We may even manage to get a nice picture or two along the way! Everyone is invited.

Native Plant Society of Texas: Installing & Maintaining Native Landscapes - Dallas

    •    Visualize the differences between native and non-native landscapes.

    •    Comprehend how to install native plants into a landscape, including: plant choice, purchase, placement, spacing; bed and soil preparation; how to plant trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses, and seeds; what soils to use; mulching techniques.

    •    Understand maintenance requirements, techniques, and maintenance schedules for native trees, shrubs, palms, yuccas, perennials, grasses, and ground covers.

    •    Become familiar with 45 native Texas plants recommended for your landscape and 5 exotic, invasive plants to avoid.

    •    Level 3 participants will receive a completion certificate; those who, additionally, pass a test will receive a competency certificate, from the Native Plant Society of Texas. Those receiving competency certificates in Levels 1 and 3 will be awarded a Certificate in Native Plant Landscape Maintenance – a plus for maintenance specialists!

    •    Training will include a classroom session and a 2-hour outdoor walk.

    •    Only participants who have completed Level 1 may attend Level 3. Level 2 is not a pre-requisite for Level 3.

    •    Registration fee for Level 3 class is $37 for Native Plant Society members and $52 for non-members.
