Betsy Marsh, local native plant enthusiast and youth educator with the Tarrant Regional Water District, will explore opportunities and techniques for reaching and inspiring the next generation of native plant champions.

About: Betsy Marsh
As the Conservation Education Supervisor for the Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD), Betsy Marsh creates and leads diverse education programs that inspire youth to value and care for water. A Fort Worth native, Texas prairies and woodlands stole her heart at a young age, and she’s been gardening and replacing turf with native plants for 20 years. She graduated from the University of Texas and the University of Michigan where she studied environmental management, natural resource policy, and environmental education. Prior to joining TRWD, she coordinated environmental education programs, created school gardens, and managed habitat restoration efforts for the City of Grapevine. She is a proud mom of three wonderful kids and loves to spend her free time gardening and exploring wild spaces.

Total Solar Eclipse - North Texas

Parts of North Texas will be experiencing totality as the moon's shadow crosses over Texas. 

The Date & Time website offers this sequence for the 2024 Eclipse in Dallas

    •    Begins: at 12:23 pm — outer lunar shadow touches the solar face

    •    Maximum at 1:42 pm — solar face is covered as much as possible

    •    Ends at 3:02 pm — outer lunar shadow exits the solar face

The Fort Worth 2024 sequence starts and ends only one minute earlier.To get the most specific times for DFW area, visit Date & Time's annular solar eclipse page 

The maximum duration of totality in Texas is 4 minutes and 22 seconds. In DFW, Fort Worth will experience 2 minutes and 43 seconds of totality; Arlington gets 3 minutes 20 seconds; and Dallas, 3 minutes, 50 seconds.

The Earth Fair, hosted by the UT Dallas Office of Student Volunteerism & Office of Sustainability, will feature informational booths and interactive activities from student organizations, campus departments, and community partners. More than 400 students and community members participated in last year's UT Dallas Earth Fair to learn about alternative energy options, organic gardening, habitat restoration, local food production, waste reduction, and more. This year's Earth Fair theme will be "Green UTD."

This year, Earth Fair will also be Zero Waste event. Booths will not be permitted to provide giveaways/activities that generate trash.

Joshua Byrne of the Fort Worth Zoo has been passionate about insects since before he could talk, and once he was able to, it was all he talked about. He has kept and studied invertebrates privately for over 20 years, as well as professionally through the Iowa State Insect Zoo, Little Rock Zoo, and currently the Fort Worth Zoo. He has a bachelor’s degree in animal ecology from Iowa State University, but was extremely happy to move to Texas where the weather is warmer and the insects are bigger!

Forward your photos to Jim Jones. Include a list of photos with a description of the subject, including when and where taken. Remember to reduce the file size to below 3 MB. Videos are also welcome!

You can email the photos in batches to jim_jones@fwas.org or upload them to cloud storage (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) to share with Jim, which is the best way to get your files to him. Deadline for submissions is May 2, 2024.
