A Sierra Club group has formed in North Texas that will fill in a geographical gap between the Dallas Sierra Club and the Greater Fort Worth group. The new Cross Timbers Sierra Club is intended to provide easy access for residents in both Denton and Collin counties.

Organizers will host the group's first meeting March 10 at 7 p.m. at the yellow house that adjoins the Diggin It shop at 507 N. Tennessee St. in McKinney.

“This will be an introductory meeting where attendees can join the Sierra Club, the nation’s largest and most influential grassroots,” said Brandi Price, one of the founding members. “Members can learn about upcoming meetings where guest speakers will discuss protecting natural areas, water conservation, long-range water planning, gardening and hiking trips. Members will also learn about environmental issues that directly impact Denton and Collin counties.”

On March 23, the group will also hold a water planning meeting with water planning and conservation expert speakers from the Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter and local water districts and municipalities at 7 p.m. at the Frisco Railroad Depot at 6499 Page St. in Frisco.

Price, who is organizing the Cross Timbers Sierra Club with Brandon Morton and Harrison Wicks, said she became interested in environmental issues when she was in high school.

“There was a big push in the ‘90s with people talking about the ozone layer and getting people to stop using aerosol spray cans,” she said. “I’d see Greenpeace at concerts. It left a very big impression on me.”

Her desire to do something about the issues led her to join the Sierra Club and later to help form a group for others like her who live in the northern part of the DFW region and want to address issues in their area.

The Cross Timbers Sierra Club will hold meetings in both Denton and Collin counties, said Price.

Next month’s meeting will be held April 13 at 6 p.m.the Denton Public Library North Branch located at 3020 N. Locust Street in Denton.
