Dallas-based artist Ashley Milow wants to change the way we look at nature and animals how we approach our own animality.

The Fort Worth native began pursuing art at the University of North Texas where she double majored in painting and printmaking. After receiving her MFA at Washington University in St. Louis in 2014, she returned to Dallas where she now realizes her dream full-time in her Deep Ellum studio.

Ashley MilowToday, Milow’s work investigates the “multifaceted relationship between human, nature and animal as Other.”

She said she was inspired after years visiting nature preserves and watching other people's interactions with the animals.

“I noticed a pattern in how we view animals and nature through the landscape,” she said. “I wanted to focus on how we experience nature while examining the relationship between human and animal in today's Western culture.”

Milow uses photography and media installations. She said she wants the viewer to have an immersive experience with the animal or the projected landscape.

“Within the white walls of the gallery, the video installation becomes another type of constructed landscape that creates a space for the audience to experience the presence of the animals and their own animality,” she said.

She said in her work, the viewer is not only the spectator, but also the spectacle.

“The desired constructed aesthetic experience of the wilderness follows the parks, roads, trails and pathways,” she concluded. “The aesthetic becomes an important condition of the place and experience of the wilderness easily displayed before us. My installations address the animal as it becomes a novelty in a constructed experience that elevates the ideals of the wilderness.”

Milow’s work can be seen at Studio 2E2 at the Continental Gin Building on Elm Street and she welcomes anyone to visit the studio during the week by appointment.

She will have an open studio tour March 24 from 6 to 10 p.m. and March 25 from 2 to 8 p.m.
